Connecticon (that's Cuh-net-i-con, Carter) was almost too much. I have to stress the following: when trying to make connections and learn things over a weekend, don't get drunk every night. Alright? Everybody good? Alright.
Seriously, some good times were had on those drunken evenings, mostly due to the (possibly premature) invite to the cool kids table. I got to meet some folks that were all too accommodating, unaware of my star-gazing, love-knifing ways. Don't worry, they escaped unharmed... this time. I did manage to get a treasure trove of collected body lint, which is being filed appropriately by gremlin hordes as I type this.
Really, I dunno what to say here. I was blown away. All the good people Carter mentioned in the last post were just awesome. Some of them were familiar to me, some were new discoveries. I am currently doing research into that new stuff and am liking more and more of it. It's a bit tough, though. Some of these archives are huge! I salute you all.
A couple specifics I wanted to touch on:
- Super Art Fight is super awesome... fight. Basically, two people (or more) face off drawing whatever random topic is drawn by the "Wheel of Death". Each person is given 5 minutes with their topic and they are free to be as creative as possible (in fact, it's encouraged! Gasp!). This goes on for 30 minutes, at which point someone is declared a winner by the audience. It's amazingly MC'd by some of your favorite comic writers (see, they get to play too) and the audience reaction seems to fuel the fun. It was a blast. I can't wait til the next one. I want in. Kinda. The thought of it already has me sweating. Some of the talent is reeeeeaaally fucking good. I don't exactly feel like having my face blown off in front of an audience.
However, I got to do a mini version of SAF the following day behind the table of Nick and Marty's table (Art Fight Highschool/Dead of Summer). They had the setup ready and, first I helped finish one that Nick and Alina Pete from Weregeek had started (fucking... yes). Then, Joe Dunn from Joe Loves Crappy Movies suggested we do one together. My heart was aflutter. You can check out the results below. For being nervous and hung over, it turned out alright. We didn't have a "Wheel of Death" to give us topics, so we traded topics on the fly. Joe had to attend to business at his table halfway through and, since I have no idea what that's like, I continued to fill in the space with zombies and ninjas and shit. So yeah, glorified notebook drawing. Sweet.
BTW - At one point, I looked over and saw Lar from Least I Could Do and Looking for Group pick up a pen and draw next to me. I mean, does this shit just happen? Did I find the fucking golden ticket? What gives, man!?
- Seriously, big thanks to everybody for making us feel welcome. Sorry if I'm sounding like a broken record but I don't know if it could have gone better. Rad. Rad. Rad.
I'm really excited to, to the best of my ability, make these next few months of the comic something special. All feedback is welcome. Oh, and if you are new to the site because you actually used one of the cards Carter and I were handing out....
Hi. Please to enjoy.
Oh and Carter, sorry for farting on your pillow.
