He's the best at what he does, and what he does isn't very smart.

Let's talk about how Mortal Kombat is not as good as Street Fighter. Wait. I guess I already did.

Here's the thing. Once the gore novelty wears off, Mortal Kombat is just a fighting game with a pace that I do not prefer over Super Street Fighter 4 or Marvel vs Capcom 3. There are several reasons for this.

  1. I don't like having a block button. I like holding back. It's quick. It makes sense.

  2. After a grab is reversed, there's like, a "one-Mississipi". Both fighters just standing there, looking at each other, wondering what the other had for lunch. Maybe I'm too ADD, but GO! FOR THE LOVE OF ASS! Is this a fight or what?!

  3. The Hup-Hup-Hup flow of combos actually starts to annoy me. It's like the pacing of a fight in a Jackie Chan movie. If you don't know what I mean, well... sorry.

  4. This has nothing to do with pace, actually, but the art style, while beautiful in places, is nothing like the classic stuff you get from Capcom. This is subjective, for sure, but the art in Capcom games is just way better. Since you are looking at the same stuff over and over when playing these types of games, I find myself disliking Mortal Kombat's art more and more.

It's fun to rip someone's skin off. It's fun to puke acid into their gaping mouths. It's fun to turn them into babies. For a while, at least.

Portal 2, however? That game. Mmmm. Probably the best ending to a video game that I've ever personally experienced.
